The daring spirit of the pre-Code era is alive and well in this sparkling romantic comedy about Sylvia (Constance Bennett), a dowdy secretary who agrees to marry her boss, an unscrupulous lethario, in a sham ceremony so he can evade marriage to another woman. Along the way, Sylvia re-discovers herself as she contemplates an affair with a chaming Brit (Basil Rathbone), while confronting feelings for her new husband. Sylvia’s transformation from ugly duckling to uninhibited swan is just one of the film’s many delights. With a witty script, engaging performances, and generous doses of pre-code innuendo, this underrated gem is a great way to spend a Saturday night!
