Westerns are often about the assertion of rugged individuality against the corruption and helplessness of community. So it’s refreshing, every once in a while, to see a film about the emergence of community and the strength of mutual dependence. But don’t be taken in by the romanticism. This film is also notable, in its time and genre, for its depiction of pacifism. A fascinating choice that was historically inaccurate and white-washed the violence that accompanied settlement.
